Dr Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation announces national awards for excellence

IN sweet memory of Dr Mangalam Swaminathan ten prestigious national awards viz Dr Mangalam Swaminathan National Award for Excellence in Journalism, Science Reporting, Art and Culture and in Medical Malpractice investigation as well as Shri Dattopant Thengadi Seva Samman respectively are announced by Dr Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation, New Delhi, for the year 2020 and 2021. Each award will carry Rs One Lakh, citation, and momento in bronze.

Because of Covid 19, the awards were not announced last year. Hence the awards for 2020 and 2021 are being announced as follows. 

A team of experts went through all entries and selected ten persons/institutions for receiving the Awards of Excellence in their respective fields.

Dr Mangalam Swaminathan National Awards of Excellence 2020

1. Excellence in Journalism

    Dr Mangalam Swaminathan National Award is conferred on Shri R. K. Sinha, Chairman, Hindustan Samachar for his passion in writing, investigation and messianic spirit pursuing journalism for a life time.

2. Excellence in Science Reporting

    This award is being conferred to Shri Varughese Thomas, Assistant Editor, Malayala Manorama for his dedicated, consistent and brilliant reporting of scientific discoveries and personalities.

3. Excellence in Art and Culture

    Ms Mubarack Nissa Muhammad Riyas is being conferred for her excellent and world renowned academic attainments and acclaimed paintings which attracted world appreciation.

4. Excellence in Medical Malpractices                        Investigation

    Ms Pushpa Girimaji is honoured with this award for her exceptionally brilliant reportage on medical malpractices, exposing consumer grievances and life timme achievements as a passionate                        investigator for consumer empowerment.

5. Excellence in the field of Social Service 2020

   The award named after the great nationalist leader and seer Shri Dattopant Thengadi(Shri Dattopant Thengadi Seva Samman) is being conferred on Shri Aji Krishnan, HRDS India for his pioneering           work in the Adivasi areas and building thousands of houses for the homeless in remore rural areas across the country.

Dr Mangalam Swaminathan National Award for Excellence 2021

1. Excellence in Journalism 

    This award is being conferred on Shri Shriram C. Joshi, Associate Editor, Pudhari Daily for his reporting skills, prolific writing and commitment for truth.

2. Excellence in Science Reporting 

    Shri Shalabh Upadhyay, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, NEWJ for his excellency in promoting science, technology, culture and national interest through the new age Social Media.

3. Excellence in Art and Culture

    This is being conferred on Shri Ganesh P R, Web Consultant with Organiser Weekly for polularising Indian art and culture and for his exceptional achievements as a poet, writer and social activist.

4. Excellence in Medical Malpractices                        Investigation

   Advocate Apoorv Kurup is honoured with this award for her legal fights to ptotect social justice and individual safety.

5. Excellence in the field of Social Service

   Shri Suresh Jain of the Bharat Vikas Parishad is being conferred for this award named after the great nationalist leader and seer Shri Dattopant Thengadi(Shri Dattopant  Thengadi Seva Samman)  for the     commitment to social service and commendable help to humanity during floods, cyclones and Covid 19. 

Dr Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation will honour all the selected personalities with their respective awards on November 29, 2021 at NDMC main auditorium, 15, Sansad Marg, New Delhi. 

Who was Dr Mangalam Swaminathan and the object of Dr Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation

Dr Mangalam Swaminathan, popularly known as "Mangala" was a celebrated journalist, writer, academic and lover of arts, literature and culture. She was a humanist and her concern was to extent a helping hand to needy around her. She was soft spoken. Lived a simple life. Her last work was a highly acclaimed curation of an exhibition on MS Subbha Lakshmi, renowned Carnic--Singer, on her birth centenary. 

This exhibition was inaugurated by the Vice President of India Hon'ble M. Venkaiah Naidu on September 15, 2017 at IGNCA auditorium, New Delhi. Dr Mangalam was in the process of taking this exhibition to Chennai, on the Vice President's suggestion, when she was admitted to Max Hospital, Saket, New Delhi with a minor stomach upset on the night of Oct 2, 2017. Due to criminal medical neglect and misconduct within 4 days, at the age of 52, she left heavenly abroad leaving her family members and appreciators weeping. 

To keep alive her memory and to retrieve and rekindle the vibrant mission Mangala had to leave half way, her dreams in a variety of areas where she was passionately involved at the time of her untimely death on October 7, 2017 her family set up Dr Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation(Regd) from her own life savings. 

The object of the Foundation is to continue and complete whatever she pursued in the fields of journalism, science reporting, art and culture and exposing medical malpractices and neglect that take away human lives.
